Ling L: Sign Languages and Deaf Cultures
Nina Feygl Semushina (University of Chicago)
This course provides an introductory exploration of sign language linguistics and also discusses the relationship between language and culture. While mainly concentrating on American Sign Language (ASL) and American Deaf communities, we will also cover other sign languages. The course will involve a comparative linguistic analysis of sign languages with spoken languages. However, it is essential to note that the course will not involve learning ASL or any other sign language; rather, it will focus on learning about sign languages and their structures.
