Shanti Ulfsbjorninn is an Associate Professor at the University of Deusto in Bilbao. Their research focuses largely on the nature of the phonological module, its universal components, and the implications its representations have on our understanding of the linguistic derivation. This involves pursuing a modular account of morpho-phonological phenomena at one end (allomorphy, item-specific phonology), and the mapping to phonetics at the other. In addition to Romance, they prioritize working on isolates and lesser-studied languages: Basque, Ik and Fur. They have been exploring the use of technology to carry out linguistic fieldwork on endangered and lesser studied languages at a distance, most recently with Hawu (Malayo-Polynesian) and Calabrese (Italo-Romance).
