Cult E: Covering vulnerable communities in international journalism
Razvan Sibii (University of Massachusetts Amherst)
In this seminar, we will discuss how journalists cover vulnerable communities across the world. We will also look at how the normal journalistic values and practices (such as the elements of newsworthiness, objectivity and reporting techniques) often fail to take into consideration the special challenges that come with reporting on communities who can easily be harmed by publicity. No special qualifications are required for this seminar. Students need not have any experience with journalism, other than an interest in helping figure out how the news media can best do its most important work: giving a voice to the voiceless.
