Cult A: Introduction to Race and Sexuality
Cristina Khan (Stony Brook University)
Taking an interdisciplinary approach, this course focuses on the co--constitutive nature of race and sexuality. We begin by centering sociological understandings of racialization, racial formations, and racism in the U.S. American context. We then locate sexuality as a social formation, uncovering its articulation by and through constructions of race. We analyze visual texts to uncover how racialized, sexualized, and gendered meanings are ascribed to bodies across various media.
