Ling K: Phase Theory (advanced)
Adam Szczegielniak (University of Gdansk)
(Chomsky 2001, 2005 and following work) argues that v and C are phase heads, and there has been an ongoing debate whether D, and other heads, are also phase heads. This course will review several arguments for phasehood (from syntactic locality to prosodic, morphological and semantic domains). The course trains students in advanced syntactic analysis and engages in critical reading of cutting edge research in syntax, morphology and semantics. Students are provided with tools enabling them to read and evaluate advanced research papers with the aim to develop their own research goals and proposals. The examined dataset covers diverse language families, which enables participants to further develop their skill set in comparative linguistic analysis. Students are expected to solve short problem sets, as well as read and actively discuss research papers.
