I joined it primarily for Introduction to Formal Semantics due to my upcoming TAship, but I ended up connecting with people through workshops and such connections are invaluable.
I could hear people saying unconventional things that almost noone would talk about on TV or elsewhere. I could speak my mind without being afraid that something might happen to me or that I would be judged. I, as usual, could widen my horizon and learn absolutely new things or, by contrast, brush up some previous knowledge
I came for the readings and discussing texts and that's what I got, but I did not expect to find such a warm, friendly, informal athmosphere. It really feels like a very special online space. I guess you can learn about decolonisation in other places too, but this feeling of community is very hard to come by.
I can attend the best linguists' lecture at the convenience of my home desk! I appreciate the exposures to the concepts and courses that I don't currently have an access to in my local institution!
I love linguistics research, especially the research of generative linguistics, for me, "interest is the best teacher"! Love linguistics! I hope your seminar can be more and more successful!
the Professors were very accepting and kind. They never for once made me feel like anybody had a silly or basic question to ask. They always very happily and eager answered all of our queries.
I was really impressed with my experience at V-NYI. The professors were engaging and knowledgeable, and created a positive learning environment that encouraged active participation. Teaching assistants were readily available and provided clear explanations and feedback on our work. The course topics were well-chosen and delivered in a way that was both informative and stimulating and the organization of the curriculum made it easy to follow and manage my workload. I can't recommend V-NYI highly enough! It provided an exceptional educational experience and I enjoyed every second of it!
As a person who was constantly bullied at work and humiliated I want to say that the belief the NYI staff puts in people is something that helps me keep going on and never losing hope. There are many institutions and universities and colleges that give excellent knowledge and skills. To do that, they need to have high proficiency and expertise. However, there is only one place that gives somethig more than knowledge - it is NYI. It gives belief, love and support. Such miracles are not to be founf everywhere. And I want to thank NYI staff for these treasures.

As an independent Ph.D. candidate in linguistics (self-paced), I have just grown up with VNYI. I've remembered the excitement I got in the first VNYI-5 course (Intro to Syntactic Structures), John's clear explanation on this basic linguistics book help me to deepen my knowledge for linguistics. As a middle-aged Ph.D. student, it is hard to balance research life and family life. Especially in the pandemic times. In the past three years, the experience with VNYI build my confidence in linguistic fields. The excellent lecturers: John, Susi, Marcel, Hana Filip, Laura Kalin, Tobias Scheer, all help me to build the basic foundations in this field. Without VNYI, I cannot get this cutting-edge information to complete this self-directed Ph.D. journey. When the next VNYI is approaching, I used to check the updates in the mailbox. It is a kind of spiritual support in a way. Thank you VNYI people, looking forward to see you all in the virtual sky again.
