Cult B: Reflections on the Digital Divide in two BRICS nations (India and South Africa)
The key objective of the lecture will be to cultivate discussion on the general and specific, multi-faceted digital divide that caters to a multicultural society. This lecture covers the digital divide in India to provide an analytical lens to study the digital divide in various socio-cultural contexts. The discussions seek to enhance understanding of the social, cultural, and economic causes that contribute to the levels of the digital divide in India, which establishes the digital divide beyond the technical. It will also reflect an interdisciplinary lens to look into the digital divide in India, which delves into culture-centric and gendered dimensions of the divide. In the lecture series, the main discussion will be catered - (i) The application of the concept of the digital divide in a multicultural society (ii) the gender and the socio-cultural digital divide (iii) The digital divide and ethnicity.
