Cult D: Twice-Told Tales: Plays and Poems in Conversation
Leah Lowe (Vanderbilt University)
Mary (Polly) Gannon (NYI Academic Director of Critical Cultural Studies)
Interlocutors Wanted! Our seminar will be a conversation emerging as a counterpoint between drama and poetry, and among all participants. Some of the texts we will talk about are Sam Shepard’s Buried Child and Appropriate, by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, and poems by Gwendolyn Brooks and Ross Gay (“To the Young Who Want to Die” and “Sorrow is Not My Name,” respectively; among others). As we will see, these plays and poems converse with one another in various ways. Our own conversation will touch upon questions of race and gender, translation, beauty, and flora and fauna (including ourselves). Please join us.
