Ling N: Issues in Non-Concatenative Morpho-Phonology (advanced)
Noam Faust (Université Paris 8, CNRS SFL)

This seminar will lead students through the challenges of analyzing complex morpho-phonological patterns that do not appear to be concatenative. We will ask whether, with the right tools, these processes can be solved using only item-and-arrangement mechanisms. This will cover data from a wide range of languages, where we see irregular phenomena, additive and subtractive morphology, as well as templatic phenomena. The question underlying everything is what are the limits on the manipulation of 'form' in human language.
