Writing against Borders:

Mary (Polly) Gannon (co-Director, NYI Critical Cultural Studies) Alla Gutnikova (Independent Researcher) Phuong Pham (St. Jose State University) Abdur Rehman Khan (NYI) Ivana Širinić (Humboldt University of Berlin) Melis Umut (Stony Brook University) Liuba Zakharova (Hamburg)

Description:  Our seminar will look at the ways we experience, participate in, and refuse border regimes of various kinds, and the ways we cultivate boundaries that hold and protect us. We'll view these matters through the lenses of film, poetry and literature. Some of the issues that we'll discuss: ableism/disability, ageism, migrant justice and carceral regimes, desires and bewilderments, the human and more-than-human world, imperial expansion and the nation state, and, inevitably, war and peace.

Our agenda is emancipatory, anti-carceral, interdisciplinary, and transformative. And, finally, we endorse and embrace (we hope) a practice of compassionate listening

WaB meets Mondays at 3 pm (Central European time). Participants are strongly encouraged to attend in person, with cameras on, via zoom, and also attend other NYI Universe events.
