Seminar: Ling J: Strict CV metrics or how to live without moras (advanced)

Noam Faust (Université Paris 8, CNRS SFL)

Moraic theory has dominated the field of metrics for decades, leading to the impression that all of the problems have been solved. Quite the opposite is the case, as the model presents serious conceptional an empirical problems. In Strict CV, moras are “out of work” (Scheer & Szigetvári 2005), as their role is taken up by V-slots, empty or filled. Still, until 2014, little work has been conducted in this framework on weight-sensitive languages. In this seminar, we will use this theory in order to generate the typology of quantity-sensitive stress assignment. The central tool will be that of “Incorporation”(Ulfsbjorninn 2014, Faust & Ulfsbjorninn 2018), which derives weight from syllable structure. As we will see, this approach does not suffer from the problems of moraic theory.
